Coopers Hotel, Newtown

221 KING STREET, NEWTOWN

Reviewers on board: Macca, Robot Simone, Joe Blogs
Time of review, Late Saturday night dinner - Sept. 2012

Hazy memories

It was September. 2012. Aaaaaaaaages ago. We tried to post this blog way back then and failed. In 2015 we tried to whip through another review, took a few more notes, lost them, failed again. The SPL crew are all a bit busy with other commitments at the moment so for now, here's what we had to say on the Coopers. A lost blog.....

This Newtown pub, situated on popular King Street, dates back to around 1869 when it was then known as The Shakespeare Hotel. Beers, beers, jugs, meals, tranny bingo, beers, ground floor bar, dining area, open-top outdoor deck upper-floor beer garden thingo upstairsy bar, beer, check, check, check.

[2012] Following a stint at local Courthouse Hotel and a blow through Kellys, the SPL trio made the short trek uphill to uncle Coop's place, deciding to take the stairs up to the airy "deck". A reasonably short time ago (in the pub's 150 year history) the owners popped the top turning the first floor of the Coopers into a sunny outdoor area with a nice beer gardeny feel. By the time we arrived the sun had gone down and some of the crowd had seeped in but it was a mostly pleasing experience. Wanker factor wasn't too bad to begin with but unfortunately it did get bad. Real wankery bad. Not the venue's fault. Just wankers, wankers everywhere! Apologies non-wankers.

Our experience from the comic-themed menu was pretty good. The beef burger was good with lots in it, just a a little hard to eat unless you can dislocate your jaw. "Steak. Goood", said Macca. And then the rest of our review notes take a mumbly-jumbly turn for the worst but it would appear that a burger, perhaps called "Q" was $18 and someone said it was "Aauwsomme". James sq"uires 650, 340 c for a lem squash. Booze - James, spew, recs., Old, superdty, vb, pal, bostons, carrlton Drought $5. Gd service. Good toilets.

As the night ticked on, we got ticked off (see "wanker factor" above) and departed, leaving the growing crowd to increase in size, volume, muscles, out-of-towners and late-night-owlers. Fairly sure they all enjoyed their night.

[2015] Three years later we were back again, this time for a mid-week lunch. There's a bit of rain about so we make a nest in the dining area and enjoy a couple of burgers. They're different to last time but they're good. Good beers on tap, nice food options and friendly staff help make a pleasant experience. The locals are again perched downstairs, enjoying the peace and quite.

That's all for now.

Cheers
SPL
