Up My Nostril ; Adelaide Pubs Part 3

A quick trip across town from the Ed Castle and I'm in the 'East End' at The Austral Hotel, an establishment first opened in 1879, then known as "The Family Hotel". The Austral, or "the Nostril" to some, had been a popular lunchtime destination for me for a little while (and a little while back) and still continues to be for many others, with prime position arse-parking out front between the footpath and roadside. 40+ degrees is probably getting a bit hot for outdoors this day but still spotted a few loving the out-front vibe. I pulled up a perch by the bar and snuck a few drinks in from a $12 jug of Pale Ale. Slurp.

In my later years living in Adelaide, I started avoiding the place. It used to be a bit grittier than it is now and it was also considered a live music venue back in the day. Bands and punters would love the gigs out in the beer garden. This all changed (around 2005-ish?) when the dipshits moving into the new appartments next door complained and had the live music put down to die. Another moronic episode of new city-dwellers spoiling an existing establishment. The Austral put a crap load of money in for a sound-proofing expedition out back only to reopen the area as a wank-fest function space by the name of The Bunka.

Around about the same time this all started happening, I noticed drink prices quickly elevating and that was about the time I gave up on it. Do hold a few fond memories of gigs out back though, along with long lunches in the sun out front, sinking beers and bowls of wedges.

Popular Rundle Street frontage

I asked Spoz on his thoughts of the Austral but he, like a lot of others I know, have pretty much abandoned the place. He mentioned he'd been there once in a blue moon, maybe once in the past 5 years. Here's one of his Austral blog photos to prove he'd at least stepped foot in the place that one time.
