Occidental Hotel, Sydney

43 York Street, Sydney
Reviewers present: BurgerBot, Joe Blogs & special guest Diddy Kong
Time of day: Lunch time

It's quick, it's easy, it's the "Occy"

(The old rating: 3 rubber chickens who are on the brink of becoming 3 and a half.)

Looking for something quick, simple and cheap? In this area of the city, this is it.

Retreating from the Concourse Bar 5 minutes earlier (read review here), it was nice to settle in the back room, snugly perched between the back bar and kitchen. While thirsty passer-bys will find themself a cold one at the front bar, overlooking Wynyard Park from the corner of York and Erskine, we like to settle out back for the sole reason of grabbing a cheap meal with a cheap beer.

The Liquid Gold

A Carlton Draught will cost you a glorious $4.90, the lowest price of the reviews so far. Under $5 and you're on a winner. Some good options on tap here too - 4 Pines Kolsche, James Squires Fifty Lashes and The Chancer, Coopers Sparkling Ale (hello!), Guiness and Heineken, as well as Hahn Superdry, Resches Draught, Carlton Giraffe, VB, Tooheys Spew, Old and the Friday stubbie specials. BEER!

Put Something In The Gut/Face
Not a glamorous kitchen. Here you'll find Jay & Silent Ken in the kitchen rocking the hot plate cookin' up a cheap grill thrill for the punters sipping coldies over yonder. If you're up for a bit of entertainment, try your eyes on a bit of tele - darts weren't too shabby today. On Fridays head on upstairs for bit more room to boogie.

Burgers with options options options! The lot, the not, with cheese, without cheese, even with or without chips! Don't get me started on the jaffles nom nom nom. Nom? Not really vegetarian friendly, unless you count the "hamburger without meat" hamburger option.

All the food at Jay's is what you would call 'homely 80s rsl aussie flashback pub tucker', it is what it is, and we like that.

This "hamburger with cheese" will set you back around $7 if our memory serves us correctly but if you want chips, slap on another $2.

Burger with cheese, see it, believe it

To Sum It Up
We're not sure if it's the nostalgia or the fact that it's so quick and consistently "noice", one thing we know is we'll be back. Pews fill up around 12 sharp so on ya bike!

The Occidental Bistro on Urbanspoon

  1. Sadly, peoples, the food at Occidental has taken a bit of a dive. We returned a few months ago and were shocked to find "Jays Bistro" is gone, the kitchen was in chaos and the food, an hour late, was average. We visited again this week to give it a second chance. This time the food came in reasonable time and the quality was better but we still miss Jay. Jay, where have you gone!
