Albion Place Hotel, Sydney

531 George Street, Sydney
Reviewers Bot, Blogs, Dr Doom
Time of review: Windy lunch time

"George Street safe haven?"

We weren't planning on going here for lunch, we only went because our first preference, The Edinburgh Castle around the corner, was booked out proving to be more popular than we expected (expect a review on this one in the future). This is the second time we've reviewed here, although the first official review since starting the blog.

Here you'll find a ground floor bar, mezzanine lounge area, and a first floor bar and dining area with views overlooking George Street. Outside seating is available along the side of the hotel as well as out the back of the mezzanine lounge area.

The staff are friendly enough and there is plenty of room for dining. You won't have too much trouble finding a spot (maybe that says something?). There's music playing over the sound system and TVs (today playing sport, on our previous visit we were treated with decent music videos).

Carlton Draught is $5.30, not bad. Unfortunately for us ordering Fat Yak, we were stripped $7.60 a schooner. Fucking. Joke.

For food, we ate the barra', fish & chips and steak. Our thoughts on these?
  • Barramundi, served with salad - Good. "First it was adequate, then it was nice."
  • Beer battered fish, served with fries and salad - "Not bad! Filled me up. Plenty of fries. Prefer the bigger "chip" style though."
  • Steak, served with fries - "Fine. Cooked correctly"
On our previous visit we had this to say about the place:
  • Quick food
  • Beer's bit expensive, perhaps due to boutique selection
  • Further [from work, for us] except if you catch the train to Town Hall station.
  • "No salad!" [with schnitzel]

Burger Bot's plate stealing in action

In conclusion, not a bad place for a drink (stay away from the expensive stuff) and a chat amongst friends. Bit boring if you were on your own. Low jerk-factor during the day and also good in the evening for a pre-show (at the Metro) drink. For some reason the night-time-drunken-wanker-factor is lower than some of the other pubs of the area, which is nice. Perhaps a bit of a George Street safe haven.
