Australian Youth Hotel, Glebe

"A wooden gooden"

Glebe seems to have a certain style of pub, a bit different to some of those in nearby Inner-west suburbs, one of which is the Australian Youth Hotel tucked away in the backstreets. Backstreets back alright!

The Australian-heritage-slightly-Irish-pub-feeling Australian Youth Hotel is a bit of a gooden. A wooden gooden. Like neon, marble and polished concrete floors in ya pub? Fuck that shit. You wont find it here. The 1857-established AYH has some 'ye ol homely inn' class. Worn wooden floor boards in the front bar and cozy fireplace-equipped lounge, black and white checker-board floor on the way out towards the dunnies and dining area. Hidden courtyard beergarden out back. There's also a restaurant upstairs, originally the pub's stables.

Get yourself a beer, pick a game or book from the bookcase, grab a couch and enjoy. We last visited this one in the later part of Summer on a rainy day and it's not a bad pub at all. Seems to be particularly suited to the Winter weather but enjoy it all year 'round. Hey, if the weather's feeling particularly Irish, pop on in!

The range of beers on tap are not too bad either. A couple we spotted and/or swigged were Vale Ale, Coopers Pale, Pikes Oakbank Pilsner, Guinness, Carlton Draught, and Bostons Pale Ale. For price point, the Carlton Draught was $5.20 (pretty acceptable!) and Vale Ale at $7.

On the food side, things are pretty good. We recommend trying the Guinness Pie. Burger Bot and Blogs spotted the pub's burger on the menu ($18) with the tag along the lines of "awarded best burger - pubfoodguide" so they had to try it. Unfortunately they were a bit disappointed summing up their burger comments to "it's okay". Maybe their expectations were too high. Maybe it was a bad day in the AYH pie office.

The pie

Delicious pie!

We like the character of this one and there's plenty of it. Generally, a good pub. If we lived around the corner, we'd be there more often...Rather than once in a blue moon. Check it out.
